Fort William sits at the foot of Ben Nevis in the heart of the Scottish Highlands and has earned its title as the Outdoor Capital of the UK. This is the gateway to some of Britain's most dramatic mountain, loch, and glen scenery — and the base for several of Scotland's most iconic experiences. Ben Nevis is the highest mountain in the British Isles at 1,345 metres (4,413 feet). The main route — the Pony Track or Tourist Path — starts from the Glen Nevis Visitor Centre and is a serious 17-kilometre round trip taking 7 to 10 hours. The path is well-maintained but the summit is frequently cloud-covered. Even without a summit attempt, the drive through Glen Nevis — a spectacular glacial valley beneath the mountain — is worth the visit. The Jacobite Steam Train runs from Fort William to the fishing port of Mallaig, crossing the iconic Glenfinnan Viaduct — 21 arches that featured as the Hogwarts Express route in the Harry Potter films. The train operates from April to October with up to two daily services. The 2-hour journey passes Glenfinnan Monument (where Bonnie Prince Charlie raised his standard in 1745), Loch Eil, and views of the Small Isles. Book at least 60 days in advance. The regular ScotRail service runs the same route year-round at lower cost. Neptune's Staircase at Banavie, just north of Fort William, is the longest staircase lock in Britain — eight locks on the Caledonian Canal that raise boats 64 feet over 500 yards. Designed by Thomas Telford and completed in 1822, watching boats navigate the locks takes up to 90 minutes and is a fascinating free spectacle. The canal towpath offers excellent walking and cycling. The West Highland Museum in the town centre is free and covers the region's history from the Jacobite risings to Highland life. Fort William's waterfront promenade along Loch Linnhe is a pleasant evening walk.
