About Wild Atlantic Way

The Wild Atlantic Way is a 2,500-kilometre coastal driving route — the longest defined coastal touring route in the world — stretching from Malin Head in County Donegal to the Old Head of Kinsale in County Cork. It passes through nine counties and three provinces, hugging Ireland's Atlantic seaboard through some of the most dramatic coastal scenery in Europe. The route is marked by distinctive wave-shaped signposts and features over 150 official discovery points, each chosen for its coastal views, heritage, or wildlife. The highlights read like a greatest-hits of western Ireland: the Cliffs of Moher rising 214 metres above the Atlantic in Clare, the Skellig Islands off the Kerry coast, the wild bog of Connemara in Galway, the sea stacks and arches of Achill Island in Mayo, the 600-metre Slieve League cliffs in Donegal, and Malin Head — Ireland's most northerly point — where the Atlantic weather arrives first. The route divides naturally into five sections. The southwest (Kerry and Cork) takes in the Ring of Kerry, the Beara Peninsula, and Mizen Head. The midwest (Clare and Limerick) covers the Cliffs of Moher, the Burren, and Loop Head. The west (Galway and Mayo) passes through Connemara, the Aran Islands, and Achill Island. The northwest (Sligo, Leitrim, and Donegal) reaches Slieve League, Fanad Head Lighthouse, and the Inishowen Peninsula. Most travellers cover the full route in 10 to 14 days, though it can be tackled in shorter sections. The signposted discovery points make navigation straightforward, and the route mixes main roads with quieter coastal lanes that reward a slower pace.
