Argyll stretches along Scotland's western seaboard — a region of sea lochs, ancient history, and island gateways. It is where the Lowlands meet the Atlantic, and where Clan Campbell's power base at Inveraray has shaped the landscape for centuries. Glasgow is 60 miles east; the islands of Mull, Islay, Jura, and Colonsay lie offshore. Inveraray Castle is the region's centrepiece — the seat of Clan Campbell and home of the Duke of Argyll. On the shores of Loch Fyne, the castle featured as Downton Abbey's Duneagle Castle in the 2012 Christmas special. The town of Inveraray, with its whitewashed frontage and clock tower, is one of Scotland's most picturesque. Kilmartin Glen is one of Britain's richest prehistoric landscapes — over 350 ancient monuments within six miles, including standing stones, burial cairns, and rock carvings over 5,000 years old. Dunadd Fort, the coronation site of early Scottish kings, rises from the moors. Kilmartin Museum interprets the glen's extraordinary concentration of Neolithic and Bronze Age sites. The Crinan Canal is Britain's most beautiful shortcut — a nine-mile canal connecting Loch Fyne to the Atlantic, with towpath walks and boat trips. The Kintyre peninsula stretches south to the Mull of Kintyre, made famous by Paul McCartney's song — remote coastline and empty beaches. Argyll is the gateway to the islands. Mull, Islay, Jura, and Colonsay are reached by ferry from various ports — Oban for Mull, Kennacraig for Islay, Tayvallich and Lochgilphead for Jura. The Rest and Be Thankful pass on the A83 is one of Scotland's most dramatic mountain drives, connecting Glasgow to the region. Loch Fyne is famous for oysters and seafood — the loch-side restaurants are a highlight.
