About Angus
Angus stretches along Scotland's east coast between Dundee and Aberdeen — a region of royal history, dramatic coastline, and Highland gateway glens. It is Scotland's Birthplace — the Declaration of Arbroath, asserting Scottish independence, was signed at Arbroath Abbey on 6 April 1320. Arbroath Abbey, founded in 1178 by William the Lion, stands in red sandstone ruins on the coast. The Abbot's House is one of the most complete in Britain. The famous Round O — a circular window — became a landmark for mariners. Glamis Castle, 12 miles north, is a 15th-century fortress and the childhood home of Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother. Shakespeare's Macbeth is set here. Royal connections, the Italian Garden, walled garden, and nature trail reward a full day. The Behind the Seams exhibition runs March to October 2026. The Angus Glens — five distinct valleys from the coast to the Cairngorms — offer waymarked trails, lochs, and wildlife. Glen Clova, Glen Prosen, Glen Isla, Glen Esk, and Glen Lethnot each have their own character. The Arbroath red sandstone cliffs offer sea stacks, natural arches, and a coastal trail with seabird colonies. Carnoustie Championship Golf Course has hosted The Open; 30 courses line the Angus coast. Kirriemuir, inland, is the birthplace of JM Barrie, creator of Peter Pan. Angus is 20 minutes from Dundee.
