The road is well-surfaced and scenic, with pull-offs at Annestown, Stradbally, and Bunmahon. Allow 2 to 3 hours with stops.
The Waterford Greenway is a 46-kilometre off-road trail from the city to Dungarvan, following a disused railway line through countryside, over a Victorian viaduct at Kilmacthomas, and through a 400-metre tunnel at Ballyvoyle. Bike hire is available at both ends and at Kilmacthomas midway. Most visitors cycle a section rather than the full distance — the Kilmacthomas to Dungarvan stretch (roughly 20 kilometres) is the most scenic.
Inland, Lismore on the River Blackwater is 30 minutes from Dungarvan. The castle gardens — separate from the private castle — are open to visitors and feature contemporary art among heritage plantings. The town itself is one of the prettiest in the southeast.
