Start at the Rock of Cashel. The complex is visible from the approach road, rising above the Golden Vale on its limestone outcrop. Arrive before 10am or after 4pm to avoid the coach crowds that peak midday. Inside, Cormac's Chapel (1127–1134) is the highlight — a Romanesque masterpiece with carved stone arches and Ireland's oldest surviving frescoes. The round tower, cathedral, and Hall of the Vicar's Choral fill out the visit. Below the Rock, walk 10 minutes across fields to Hore Abbey — a roofless Cistercian ruin with no entrance fee and often no other visitors.
Drive south to Cahir (20 minutes on the N24). The castle sits on a rocky island in the River Suir and is one of the most intact medieval castles in Ireland — three wards, a massive keep, and curtain walls you can walk. The Glen of Aherlow, southwest of Cahir, runs 16 kilometres between the Galtee Mountains and Slievenamuck ridge. The Christ the King viewpoint and walking trails are accessible from several car parks. The forest walks are gentle; the Galtymore summit (919m) is a serious mountain hike.
