About Longford

County Longford is one of Ireland's quietest and most overlooked counties — a flat midlands landscape of bog, canal, and gentle pasture where significant heritage sites sit largely undisturbed by tourism. For visitors completing a tour of all 30 Irish counties, Longford offers authentic, uncrowded rewards. The Corlea Trackway is an Iron Age bog road built in 148 BC — the largest prehistoric bog road in Europe. An 18-metre stretch of preserved oak is on display in a dedicated visitor building near Kenagh village, 15 kilometres from Longford town. Free admission, OPW managed. The trackway may have connected the Hill of Uisneach to Rathcroghan in neighbouring Roscommon — linking two of Ireland's most important ancient sites. St Mel's Cathedral dominates Longford town — a neoclassical landmark devastated by fire on Christmas morning 2009 and painstakingly restored and reopened. Free to visit year-round, the cathedral's restoration story is as compelling as its architecture. The Royal Canal Greenway is a 130-kilometre Dublin–Longford cycling and walking trail. The Longford section runs through Clondra to Abbeyshrule — flat, well-surfaced, and family-friendly. It is one of the best canal greenway experiences in Ireland. Ardagh Heritage Village, 14 kilometres from Longford town, is a picturesque estate village worth a brief stop. Center Parcs Longford Forest, a 400-acre woodland resort near Ballymahon, offers accommodation with subtropical swimming, forest spa, and outdoor activities — a family option rather than a primary heritage attraction.

Best Time to Visit
