A self-drive tour of Connemara is one of the most rewarding drives in Ireland for those who prefer empty roads and unhurried scenery. The N59 from Galway to Clifden is well-surfaced and straightforward — roughly 80 kilometres and 75 minutes — but the real character of Connemara lies on the secondary roads that branch off it.
The Inagh Valley, between the Twelve Bens and the Maamturk Mountains, is one of the most atmospheric drives in the west. The road follows a chain of lakes through open bog with barely a house in sight. Kylemore Abbey appears on the lakeshore near Letterfrack, 20 kilometres east of Clifden, and is worth at least two hours — the Victorian walled garden alone is a 20-minute walk from the main building. Five kilometres further west, Diamond Hill in Connemara National Park offers a 2-to-3-hour hike to 442 metres with views of the Twelve Bens and the Atlantic.
Clifden itself is the natural stopping point. The Sky Road — a 16-kilometre loop along the coast — leaves the town heading west and climbs to views over Clifden Bay that are among the finest in Ireland. South of Clifden, the road to Roundstone passes through a different Connemara entirely: white-sand beaches at Dog's Bay and Gurteen Bay, rocky coves, and stone-walled fields.
North of Connemara, Killary Harbour — Ireland's only fjord — is a worthwhile detour. The 16-kilometre inlet between Connemara and Mayo can be reached via the N59 through Letterfrack and Leenane. Boat trips on the fjord run from spring to autumn.

Day 2
Connemara National Park & Coast
Morning hike up Diamond Hill at Letterfrack (2–3 hours return). Afternoon drive south to Roundstone via Dog's Bay and Gurteen Bay. Return to Clifden or continue to Galway.
