County Cavan is Ireland's "lakeland county" — a landscape of over 365 lakes (traditionally, one for every day of the year) set among drumlin hills, limestone plateaus, and the southern slopes of the Cuilcagh Mountains. It is uncrowded, authentic, and deeply connected to both Ireland's ancient past and its living waterways. Cavan Burren Park is a prehistoric relict landscape on a limestone plateau beneath Cuilcagh Mountain. The park contains over 80 archaeological monuments — megalithic tombs, portal tombs, stone circles, and rock art — on 10 kilometres of trails across four looped walks. An interpretive centre explains the landscape's significance. The park is free, open year-round, and forms part of the Cuilcagh Lakelands UNESCO Global Geopark. It sits 4 kilometres south of Blacklion. Killykeen Forest Park, on the shores of Lough Oughter, offers woodland trails, lakeside views, kayaking, and family activities in one of the county's most accessible outdoor settings. The Shannon Pot is the traditional source of the River Shannon — a deep, aquifer-fed circular pool where Ireland's longest river begins its 360-kilometre journey to the Atlantic. It sits on the Cavan Way, a 26-kilometre walking route through the county's lakeland landscape. Clough Oughter Castle is a 13th-century round castle ruin on an island in Lough Oughter — one of the most photogenic heritage sites in the lakelands, accessible by boat or visible from the shore. Marble Arch Caves, just across the border in County Fermanagh (Northern Ireland), are closely linked to Cavan's geopark — show caves with an underground river boat trip through one of Ireland's finest cave systems.
